Despite Meralco leading by eight points early in the period, the Hotshots surged ahead after holding the Bolts to just six points in the last seven minutes of the quarter – and scoreless in the last 1:45.

Wright scored nine points while Pingris added seven in the third quarter as they seized an 83-70 lead heading into the final period.

But Meralco came charging right back behind their veteran leader Jimmy Alapag. The ‘Mighty Mouse’ orchestrated a comeback, knocking down two three-pointers while a missed third attempt was cleaned up by Chris Newsome for a putback as part of an 11-2 run for the Bolts.

The game was tied at 90-all with four minutes remaining.

Alapag knocked down two more triples, putting Meralco in front, 96-92, with about two and a half minutes left on the clock.

But with Meralco ahead by four, Star would rattle off six unanswered points, the first two off a jump hook from Pingris and then four straight free throws from Wright and Mark Barroca to make it 100-98 for the Hotshots.

Pingris nearly made a huge defensive play after grabbing the ball away from Meralco’s import but a foul was called, though Durham could only split from the line to keep Star in the lead.

Star could not make the most of their possession, though, and Newsome recovered the ball and was fouled to head to the line for two charities. Newsome made the first and initially missed the second but a do-over was granted due to a lane violation and he gave Meralco a 101-100 lead.

Barroca again placed Star in front after getting fouled on a drive, making two free throws for a 102-101 advantage with only 23 seconds left.

Durham almost lost the ball twice and had to put a desperate shot up but Reynel Hugnatan came up huge, finding the right spot for an offensive rebound and a layup that made it 103-102 for Meralco with only eight seconds on the clock.

But it was Wright that got the last word in after dropping in a floater with 0.7 seconds remaining to secure the victory for his team.

The final scoreboard result:

STAR 104 – Wright 27, Simon 16, Maliksi 15, Pingris 15, Barroca 13, Mallari 7, Garcia 6, Brondial 2, Melton 2, Gaco 1, Pascual 0, Reavis 0.
