The TNT Tropang Texters joined the early qualifiers in the second quarterfinal phase after emerging victorious in a tough battle against NLEX, 90-88, in the SMART BRO PBA Philippine Cup playoffs on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

No. 2 overall pick Troy Rosario posted 20 points and six rebounds while veteran reserve Danny Seigle stepped up with a vintage performance, scoring 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting.

Ryan Reyes added 12 points while Jayson Castro and Larry Fonacier both had 10.

They will face the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the second quarterfinal round while Barangay Ginebra takes on GlobalPort on the other side of the bracket. The winner of those games will advance into the semifinals, where top seed Alaska and San Miguel are already waiting.

TNT started the game off strong with Kelly Williams opening the hostilities with a three-point play en route to a 7-0 start for the higher seed.

But after a timeout called by NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez, the Road Warriors suddenly found their groove, rattling off 16 consecutive points.

Jonas Villanueva knocked down two three-pointers in the run and Asi Taulava capped it with an and-one that made it a nine-point lead for NLEX, 16-7, near the four-minute mark of the opening period.

Castro finally ended TNT’s scoring drought of four and a half minutes as he dove into the lane for a nice finish.
