Both teams are looking to grab a crucial 2-1 series lead, aiming to come close to entering the championship round against the Alaska Aces, which completed a masterful sweep against erstwhile back-to-back champions Star Hotshots.Rain or Shine tied the series last Saturday, 113-110, after a 20-point comeback thanks to the 53-point outburst by Wendell McKines and game-winning triple by Jeff Chan in the dying seconds.
Their performances spoiled the hot night of Marcio Lassiter, who made 31 points on 10 triples in the loss.
The match was a complete reversal of what happened in Game One, when it was San Miguel who rallied from 24 points to carve out a 101-95 win.
The San Miguel Beermen drew huge performances from import Arizona Reid and point guard Alex Cabagnot as they clinched a crucial 114-108 victory in Game Three of the PBA Governors’ Cup semifinals on Monday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Reid finished with 37 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, while Cabagnot had 26 points and a game-high nine assists as the Beermen took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series.
Marcio Lassiter and June Mar Fajardo each added 17 points with the MVP center also grabbing eight rebounds in the win.
The teams split the first two games of the series and this one loomed as an important contest, with history showing that the winner of Game Three in a tied best-of-five series went on to win majority of the time.
It was evident from the beginning with players on both sides bringing their A-game from the beginning. Reid scored 18 points and Cabagnot added 16 for San Miguel over the first two periods but they were matched by huge showings from Rain or Shine’s Wendell McKines and Paul Lee, who combined for 39 points between them.
San Miguel, though, held a 56-54 lead after the first two periods of the ballgame.
San Miguel opened the third with a barrage of three-pointers coming from Reid, Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz. Reid and Lassiter knocked down two apiece as they hit five of their first six attempts from beyond the arc, taking a double-digit lead, 73-62.
Lassiter, who knocked down 10 triples in Game Two, hit a third later in the period and Cabagnot added one of his own, although Rain or Shine managed to come back to within striking distance behind the play of McKines and a late three from Jeff Chan.
Rain or Shine trailed by just seven, 89-82, at the end of the third and could have been closer if a McKines shot at the buzzer wasn’t just late by a hair.
But Reid proved steady in the final period, scoring seven of his points in a 10-2 run that gave the Beermen a 110-101 lead after the Elasto Painters closed in to within a single point.
